These devices are particularly useful for high-cycle pneumatic tools requiring constant external lubrication to maintain optimal performance. It is essential to ensure that the lubricator's cup is always filled with the correct type of oil, as using unsuitable oil can cause performance issues such as sticking or slowing of pneumatic components. The lubricator should be placed where the vapourised oil can reach the parts needing lubrication, utilising the oil suspended as vapour in the compressed air flow.

Lubricating compressed air was vital to maintaining efficient pneumatic systems. Lubrication reduces friction and wear on moving parts, improving the lifespan and performance of pneumatic tools. Proper lubrication also ensures smoother and quieter operation, reducing the need for frequent and costly maintenance. Although improved technologies in manufacturing, lubricants, and seal compounds have reduced the necessity of lubrication, it is still used in specific applications. However, the nebulised oil from lubricators remains suspended in the air and is released into the work environment, potentially being inhaled by workers, which contravenes workplace environment regulations. Therefore, the use of lubricators has significantly decreased. Special exhaust filters can recover the oil, although incorrect or inadequate air lubrication can lead to mechanical failures, overheating, and accelerated component deterioration.
